We cremate a body when funeral in Japanese tradition, and bury the bones remaining, which the characters in that film keep.
I've done kotsu-age(骨揚げin Japanese), which Yu explained, and I did it unwillingly then..
However, I thought that if they had done the funeral in the western way that they lay the whole body, they couldn't have kept the bones and their relationship might have changed.
The action to keep the bones they did seems to describe that they have something just like Japanese, I thought.
